Also, as you may have discerned if you’ve been tuning in either live or streaming, SoundEffects has run its course at WIUP. There’s just no room in the schedule currently with the new crop of student broadcasters on campus now. Thanks to everyone who’s been listening, logging on, downloading, and supporting this show. The archived shows and blog will stay up for a while, and it’s possible SoundEffects may continue on in some other form. More news as it develops.

Pretty much every one of their songs is a little piece of action movie, with videos to match. Check out “Disco Volante,” “Dead Drop,” and “Attencion,” among others (YouTube has a wealth of videos, performance and otherwise). Keep your ears peeled for a track in next week’s show.

A bit of backstory: I discovered a band called Manplanet years ago when they were one of the roster of rotating house bands on a short-lived Comedy Central show called Let’s Bowl. Despite my attempts to dig up more, particularly in the way of getting my hands on their music for myself, they seem to have stayed a mostly Minneapolis-oriented local phenomenon before splitting up, though they made an impression lasting enough to warrant occasional mention by other people randomly encountered online.

One such mention about a year ago, on a forum I regularly frequent, consisted of me basically chiming in on someone else’s bringing them up, saying I’d like to know more if any such info turns up. Well, there wasn’t much more on that front, but fast-forward to just yesterday, when who should email me but the original keyboardist for Manplanet, who’s still active under the moniker Mach FoX. He very kindly filled me in on what he’s been doing, which is putting out some really catchy electro-punk.

Oh, and Mach FoX is releasing a lot of music under a Creative Commons license and “pay what you want” business model, something I’ve been a huge fan of in the online music community.
